How to eat

One delicious way to use pumpkin seed oil in food is as a salad dressing, either by itself or in combination with other healthy oils. Use pumpkin seed oil with some fresh lemon, ginger and garlic to make your own salad dressing. You can also use it as a garnish for starchy vegetables like sweet potatoes or use as a substitute for butter. It is considered a real delicacy in Hungary and Austria. A few drops are added to pumpkin soup and other local dishes. Using it as cooking oil, however, destroys its essential fatty acids. Pumpkin seed oil should not be “cooked,” as heat destroys many of its best health properties and produces a bitter taste.

Not only on salads! Pumpkin Seed Oil is suitable for savoury dishes, but also for sweets and dessert. It can be used in a wide range of dishes, including:

Important: Do not over-heat the pumpkin seed oil!

When Pumpkin seed oil is heated too much, the valuable nutrients are destroyed and the oil develops an unpleasant smell and bitter taste. The smoke point of the seed oil is an important consideration. When the oil begins to smoke, it is starting to burn; Pumpkin seed oil reaches its smoke point at 120°C (248°F). Any food preparation which includes pumpkin seed oil should be kept under that temperature. Pumpkin seed oil is not suitable for cooking or frying. This will also destroy the oil. However, it can be used for warm dishes as long as the heat is carefully controlled and doesn't get too hot for too long.

Storage

Unopened it can be stored for 18 months in a cold, dry space protected from sunshine. The exact expiry date is displayed on the bottle.

After opening, it is recommended to use it within 3-4 months, so that its valuable vitamins, trace elements and minerals do not lose their high quality.

Consumption

It is unfiltered oil, so best to shake it up before consumption.

Storage is key to keeping pumpkin seed oil fresh. Warmth and light easily oxidize the polyunsaturated fats in pumpkin seed oil, causing it to go rancid. Therefore, it should be bottled, sealed and stored in a cool, dark place. It’s important to remember that the fresh, nutty taste of the oil will dissipate after it’s first opened, though it remains good for 18 months, sometimes longer. It is also a good idea to wipe the drops of oil away from the bottle's neck after pouring; these drops can oxidize very easily and lend their rancid flavour to the next dish where pumpkin seed oil is needed.

Cleaning

Oops, a stain on clothing or table cloth!

This is a common situation: the last fork-full of salad dressed with pumpkin seed
oil lands exactly on your white blouse or shirt or table cloth. What to do? Don't panic! These are easily removed through exposure to ultraviolet radiation (sunlight). Simply make the area of the stain a little wet with water (no soap) and hang in the sun until the spot is gone, one to four hours. It may take a little longer if the sun is not shining that day. You can then wash the article as normal.
